Symptom

You are logged in to Wordpress and are editing content. All the sudden your website becomes completely inaccessible. You can neither connect by browser, nor FTP, nor by your e-mail client.

Cause

You have done the same transactions over and over again within a short period of time. The behavior matches a malicious script that tries to attack your website with a denial of service scheme. This behavior has been detected by a security software which then banned your IP from using the host for a certain while. All other users can still access the website, send and download e-mails. After a short waiting period the IP address is unbanned.

Solution

The security software cannot distinguish between hacking and deliberate actions. For the server your transactions look as if a hacker tried to break in. As Wordpress websites are under attack continuously it is impossible to turn this security software off. Operating a Wordpress website without the security software is irresponsible. At many providers you may feel “happy” for never being locked out of your website, but this comes at the high price that your website will continuously be subject to brute force attacks by hackers, which will eventually succeed.

On ordinary DSL connections with a dynamic IP address, you can unlock yourself by restarting your DSL router or disconnecting the Internet connection between the DSL router and the Internet service provider for a short time. Normally you will receive a new IP address from the Internet service provider.
