A mail distributor works according to the one-to-many principle (one sender, many recipients), a mailing list based on the many-to-many principle (many senders, many recipients).

Mail distributors are typically used when a transmitter, e.g. a company that wants to distribute an e-mail to many recipients, for example up-to-date information to all employees. In mail distribution lists, there is usually exactly one sender. All other e-mail addresses of the distribution list are only recipients but do not send to the distributor themselves. Some web space customers automatically distribute incoming emails to multiple employees or departments. The sender does not know that his mail will be distributed to several recipients. Anyone can send mails to a distributor. This can lead to the distribution of incoming spam to many recipients.

Mailing lists are discussion platforms. Anyone who participates in a list is also entitled to send mails to the list, which distributes the mails to all other participants. The participants know that every mail sent to the list reaches all other participants. However, the list only distributes emails that are submitted by list participants. The transport of emails by other senders is denied. Subscribers to the mailing list therefore only receive messages from other subscribers in the list.
