Symptom

In the Wordpress Toolkit of your Web space control center, you see the following error message:

If you open the wp-config.php file of your Wordpress website in a Linux editor (for example vi, vim), you will see the string "" at the beginning of the file. If you open the same file with a text editor such as the Windows Notepad or view it with the Linux "less" command, you will not see these characters.

Cause

You have edited the wp-config.php file of your website. Due to a character set inconsistency, an "invisible" UTF8 character has been written to the beginning of the file. The Wordpress Toolkit no longer recognizes the file as a valid wp-config.php file.

Solution

The character cannot be removed by editing with a standard Linux editor like "vi". The correct solution is to filter the erroneous UTF8 characters from the file, e.g. with the scripting language "awk". This can be done, for example, with this command sequence on the Linux command line:

awk '{ if (NR==1) sub(/^\xef\xbb\xbf/,""); print }' wp-config.php > wp-config_new.php
cp wp-config_new.php wp_config.php

After the corrupted wp-config.php file has been replaced with the corrected one, update the website entry in the Wordpress Toolkit in the webspace control panel.
