Symptom

A function of your website does not act as expected. A page remains white (empty) when you open it. Mails are not being transmitted, although your script sends them to the mail server. A picture cannot be displayed, although you know for sure that you have uploaded it.

Cause

Almost all website errors are not caused by malfunctions or missing commands of the server, but by wrong file names and paths, wrong access methods (e.g. encrypted vs. decrypted), wrong usage of PHP commands or SQL commands or typos, superfluous or missing characters in PHP scripts. Many third-party plugins for content management systems like Joomla and Wordpress are seriously flawed.

Solution

To get errors on the ropes check the error protocol ("error_log") of the web server. Error logs are a powerful instrument, but they are often neglected as many do not know that they exist. In the error logs of your web server you will almost always find helpful information to correct errors on your site. The web server protocols of your Bitpalace Business Booster can also be filtered by keywords, error types, entry types (e.g. warning, error, access and so on) or limited in time.

1. Log-in to your customer control panel of your host, e.g. "https://elbe.bitpalast.net:8843". The name of your host and your credentials for the customer control panel can be found in the server welcome mail that you have received at the beginning of your contract term.

2. Click on the "Websites & Domains" tab.

3. If the icons of the domain from which you want to see the log files are not displayed, click on the "Show more" link. (Normally this section is already visible, so you can skip this step.)

4. Click on the "Log files" link.

By default all log entries are sorted chronologically. Use the filter fields and the drop down list "all logs" to change the setting.
