Symptom

I would like to migrate the content of my Wordpress website to another domain or subdomain.

Solution

Wordpress internally stores the URL on which it is installed. All links that Wordpress generates are mapped to this URL. Simply copying your database and files to another location will continue to point the Wordpress page to the old URL even though it was opened from the new URL.

To prevent this, all internal references to the old URL must be replaced by the new URL during migration. If your web site is at a different provider, you can do it with the Snap Creek "Duplicator" plugin. Install the plugin into your Wordpress installation, unpack your entire Wordpress, copy the archive file and the installer file to an otherwise empty target domain (do not preinstall Wordpress there!) and open Duplicator’s installer.php in a browser on your new domain.

For WordPress sites on Bitpalace webspace accounts it is much easier, because here you can use the "Clone" button of the webspace control panel. (If you do not see a "clone" button, you may have manually installed Wordpress and have not yet linked it to the Wordpress Toolkit of the webspace control panel. Get it done first or ask our support for free.)

1. Log in to the webspace control panel.

2. Click the "Websites & Domains" tab.

3. Make sure you have an SSL certificate installed on the destination domain. If necessary, use the "SSL/TLS Certificates" icon to set up SSL first.

4. Click the "Clone" button in the Wordpress line of the domain.

5. Select the clone target. By default, the function offers to clone Wordpress into a new subdomain "staging.". The webspace control panel automatically creates a new database or uses a database that you select. You can also change this setting, e.g. choose another subdomain or a new domain. The clone target must be within your own webspace. Cloning to external domains is not supported.

6. Start the cloning process. If a website already exists at the destination site, confirm that it may be overwritten.

The cloned site is an exact copy of the original with one difference: all old site URLs have been replaced with the new site URL. The new website is ready for use immediately.
